Fall Party Planning 2011

WELCOME to the FALL PARTY 2011

The party planning has begun...

The party this year has been inspired by the following website: http://onecharmingparty.com/category/halloween/ (you have to click here and take a look!)

I haven't received a lot of responses on the website to assist with the party planning but there is still time to get involved. Feel free to sign up to volunteer for the party on the main page of our class site: www.mrthompsonsclassroom.com You are also welcome to join the wiki where the planning will take place. www.mrthompsonsclassroom.wikispaces.com

I have made some executive decisions to be sure that the party planning is underway for now. I have decided to try the Juice Mummies, Owl Cupcakes, Tissue Paper Pumpkin craft and a few others from the inspiring site mentioned above. Check out some of the items we will be needing below.

The Game Plan

WHOLE GROUP
A good way to start a party off is with dancing...
I think we should start the party with the (Monster Mash) 4 corners game or freeze dancing game... then we can split the children into 4 groups for stations.
Halloween Freeze Dance - Play Halloween party music or creepy sound effects and tell the children to dance. When you turn off the music, they all need to freeze. Whoever is caught moving during the freeze is out of the game. The last person dancing, wins. For a fun variation on this game, tell the children they will need to pose in the Halloween shape you will have called out during the previous freeze. Some fun shapes could be: black cat, pumpkin, broomstick, mummy, bat, etc.

STATION ACTIVITIES
Wrap the Mummy - I've often seen this game in classroom parties and it's always a hit. Divide the children into groups of three to five kids. Select one child in each group to be a mummy. Then give the other children a roll of toilet paper or crepe paper. Instruct them to wrap the mummy with the paper, leaving the eyes, nose and mouth uncovered. The first group to be done with their roll of paper, wins.
Pumpkin Penny Toss and Candy Corn Toss- Carve out a large pumpkin, making a wide opening at the top. Give each child a handful of pennies. Have them stand an appropriate distance from the pumpkin and try to toss the pennies in, one at a time. For each successful toss, give the child a small piece of candy corn Halloween candy. Also students will be tossing baggies of candy corn onto boards for points.
Craft-Make a tissue paper pumpkin craft
Eating Station- Owl cupcakes, chips, pretzels, cheese cubes, crackers, mummy apple juice, grapes, etc

What is my station? Volunteers Welcome!
Food-
Game/activity#1 (Wrap the Mummy)-
Game/activity #2 (Pumpkin Penny Toss)-
Craft (Making pumpkins)-

Dear Second Grade
We're reading Dig, Wait, Listen this week. We are learning that writers have different reasons for writing a book. Their reason is called the author’s purpose. Figuring out the author’s purpose helps us understand the story better. We will be learning about different desert animals in Dig, Wait, Listen. Maybe teaching us about them is the author’s purpose.

This Week’s Reading Skills
Comprehension: author’s purpose
Vocabulary: possessives, such as Bill’s hat or Vanessa’s
mother
Phonics: sound of ow and ou
Spelling: words with ow and ou

VOCAB WORDS TO KNOW
beyond burrow distant lengthy ranger’s warning
Story Fun Let’s have fun telling stories with your words.
I’ll ask you what each word means. Then we’ll make up a
short story with them.

10 NEW SPELLING WORDS
clown growl howl brown crown
round loud cloud sound house
Show Me the Letters! I’ll show you all the words. Then
I’ll say each word for you to spell. Stomp your feet if the
word has the letters ou as in proud. Clap your hands if
the word has the letters ow as in town.

MATH
We will continue to learn more about shapes and fractions with our Shapes, Halves, Symmetry Unit. Check out the brochure to follow on how you can support these skills at home.

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE
Last week was devoted to learning about nutrition and how our school menu stacks up to the test.  We took this week as an example and sorted the menu into the various food categories.  Ask your son or daughter what we found out.

Book Fair And Right to Read Week
We were able to visit the book fair last Friday, but it will be open all week if there is a book your child would like to purchase.  There will be times during the day for them to drop by and make their purchases.
Feel free to join in on our Breakfast with a Book - Tuesday morning.  It's usually a very well attended event!  There will be doughnuts and drinks for a treat.  Bring a blanket and pillow and read, read, read.
There will be 4 reading tickets arriving home today with your child, they are welcome to read at home and bring them in each day to have a chance for the daily drawing to earn a $5.00 gift certificate.

School Supplies
Every year around this time we are in need of additional supplies for our classroom.  Currently, we are running low on pencils, crayons, glue sticks, chlorox wipes,  dry erase markers, dry erase markers and oh did I mention dry erase markers. LOL  They have wiped out the tray in the past few months. :)  If you could send in these items to help your child for the remaining days of school, it would be greatly appreciated.

Earthquake Victims in Japan
  • I had a group of third grade students come up to me at the bus lines last week and ask about helping collect items for the earthquake victims of Japan.  The students were my second graders from last year who generated over 42 dollars on their own to donate for Katrina.  What started as a classroom project has now been etched into their minds as a calling to action.  I was so proud of them for taking the lead on this effort.  They decided to work on posters for the hallway and a skit for the announcements.  Texas Roadhouse in Hamilton, Oh will accept our donations for the earthquake victims of Japan. They have partnered up with Matthew 25 Ministries to collect goods. They need: Personal care products, diapers, cleaning supplies (no bleach), non-perishable food items, and clothing. This is a great way to help out. Just clean out your closet and donate... Thanks for your contributions in advance.
